How health care in the US works

When you go to a doctor, hospital or community health center, you will be asked if you have health insurance. If you have health insurance, show your insurance card or policy. The medical staff will usually make a copy of your card and call the insurance company to see how claims are paid. You will be asked to pay for part of the service you receive, called a "co-pay". The medical facility usually bills the insurance company directly for the balance.
