the Boulder Independent Business Alliance (BIBA) and the American
Independent Business Alliance, will speak on Thursday, January 17th,

Milchen will talk about ways for citizens, public officials and business owners to collaborate more effectively in their common interest; the role of local ownership of business in community prosperity, stability and democracy; and how existing organizations like the local Chamber of commerce can enhance their member services. School and High School Students in Need of Businesses to Explore On On the first Friday in
February, area high school & middle school students will be observing
professionals in our business community. Since the fall, teachers have
been preparing students for their futures with in-class career exploration
curriculum, testing and projects. It
is no mistake that Job Shadow Day 2002 takes place at the start of the
second half of the school year. Students
are looking forward to summer jobs, graduation & all of them need real information about a career field that interests them.
What better way to educate our youth than pairing a student with a
professional to help he/she understand the roles & responsibilities of
your position? The schools,
employers and students are all supplied with informational packets to help
make the February 1st, Job Shadow event fun & exciting.

UMass Dartmouth continues
its continuing its graduate courses for Computer Engineering or Computer
Science late this month. Thirteen
area engineers enrolled in the first two courses.
They report high satisfaction with the level of instruction, the
application of what they are learning to their work, and professional
satisfaction in the classroom experience.
As the courses are not sequential, engineers can begin this winter
without having taken earlier courses.

Commerce is sponsoring an information session January 16 at SBA
Sept 11 Economic Injury Disaster Loan Workshop Due to overwhelming
demand, The workshops will be
held Monday, January 7 and 14 at Eligible small businesses
that have been directly impacted and have suffered substantial economic
injury can apply for working capital loans of up to $1.5 million at up to
4% for up to 30 years. Loan
proceeds can be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and
other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.
Loans in excess of $5,000 require the pledging of collateral to the
extent that it is available. Personal
guaranties are required. The
SBA will not decline a loan for lack of collateral.
Applications will be
available at the workshop. They
are not available via the mail and must be obtained in person from an SBA
rep. The application
process has been streamlined. The
SBA will try to make decisions on each application within 21 days.
Last date for submitting an application is If a small business can
demonstrate a loss of revenue, year to year as of Sept 11, the SBA may be
able to provide much-needed assistance through this program. Per
