The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the September 2001 Monthly and Third Quarter Economic Update, an in-depth look at economic activity for those periods in several categories.

SBA Sept 11 Economic Injury Disaster Loan Workshop

Due to overwhelming demand, Cape and Islands Community Development, Inc. will, once again, host representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration.  Discussed will be, the SBAs Sept 11 Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program.  The program has been recently expanded to include Massachusetts businesses affected by the September 11 events or subsequent federal actions.

The workshops will be held Monday, December 10, 17, January 7 and 14 at 1:00p.m. at the Cape & Islands Community Development, 307 Main Street , Hyannis , MA .  You need attend only one workshop

Eligible small businesses that have been directly impacted and have suffered substantial economic injury can apply for working capital loans of up to $1.5 million at up to 4% for up to 30 years.  Loan proceeds can be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.  Loans in excess of $5,000 require the pledging of collateral to the extent that it is available.  Personal guaranties are required.  The SBA will not decline a loan for lack of collateral.

Applications will be available at the workshop.  They are not available via the mail and must be obtained in person from an SBA rep.   The application process has been streamlined.  The SBA will try to make decisions on each application within 21 days.  Last date for submitting an application is January 21, 2002 .

If a small business can demonstrate a loss of revenue, year to year as of Sept 11, the SBA may be able to provide much-needed assistance through this program.

Per Jeannine Marshall, Executive Director, The expansion of the SBAs Disaster Loan Program provides much needed relief to struggling Cape and Islands businesses.   Several bed and breakfasts and hotels have taken advantage of the opportunity to submit an application.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling Jessica at Cape & Islands Community Development, 508-790-4980 ext 516.

Give the Gift of Travel

This holiday season, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce encourages you to consider giving the gift of travel.  As a cnn.com article by Thurston Hatcher  (published 12/4/01) states:  If there's simply no tie, sweater, DVD player or robotic dog that will do the trick this holiday season for that relative who has everything, why not send your beloved's spirits soaring this Christmas with the gift of travel?  The article goes on to suggest purchasing gift certificates for hotels, spas or air travel as the perfect gift for the person who has everything.  [See the complete article at:  http://www.cnn.com/2001/TRAVEL/NEWS/12/04/gifts.adviser.2/index.html ]  Many of our members offer gift certificates keep reading!

Gift Certificates

And speaking of gift certificates  Please click here if your establishment offers gift certificates (this will generate a simple email to us that says that you offer gift certificates.  If you want to include information with this listing, please include it in the body of the email).  We will be compiling a list and posting it on our website for website visitors who are looking to give the gift of travel to Cape Cod .  As the holiday season is upon us, please respond ASAP and check www.capecodchamber.org next week for the list of members who offer gift certificates (maybe it will help you finish your holiday shopping!).
