ratings by the attendees: "all very valuable."
Our next offering is The Workforce Training Fund: A Low
cost option for training your staff. October 23 at the Career
Opportunity Center, High School Road Extension, Hyannis,

The Workforce Training Fund uses your unemployment dollars
to fund business based training. David Augustinho, Executive
Director of the Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board
will give an overview of the Workforce Training Fund and local
employer, Tony Shepley, will share his experiences using the
customized training program. The Express Program services
employers with 50 or less employees, and JTEC offers the

New England Intercollegiate Golf Championships at
The Captains |
 |
The finest collegiate golfers in New England are on
Cape Cod next week in the New England Intercollegiate Golf
Championships being contested on both the Port and Starboard
courses at The Captains in Brewster. This is the nation's
largest single collegiate golf tournament.
The 36-hole event runs Monday and Tuesday, with 235 golfers
from 47 colleges and universities squaring off in an event
that was first held in 1934. The tournament is unique in that
schools from Divisions I, II and III compete against each
other.
A familiar name will lead the University of Rhode Island in
its quest for a fifth straight title. The top player for the
Rams is former Cape Cod High School All-Star Mike Carbone of
Brewster, who toiled for Nauset Regional in his high school
days. Carbone returns to his hometown hoping to regain the
medalist crown he captured two years ago on a course where he
was the club champion three straight years.
Carbone, the senior captain of the Rams, was beaten in last
year's championships by Hartford's Dean Carrigan. Carbone and
Carrigan were deadlocked at 4-under par 140 after 36 holes,
with Carrigan securing the victory on the third playoff hole.
Rhode Island, ranked No. 3 in the country at the start of the
season, captured the Div. I crown last fall, with Bryant
College winning Div. II and Husson College taking Div. III.

The Commonwealth Corporation's Entrepreneurial Training
Program may be just what you need. This program has been
helping aspiring entrepreneurs establish new businesses since
1989. It is a 20-week program designed for people with
promising business ideas: 10 weeks of intensive and practical
classroom instruction followed by 10 weeks of individual
one-on-one consulting to assist each entrepreneur during the
crucial start-up phase of his/her business. We are exploring
the possibilities of offering this course on Cape Cod.
Classes include instruction in strategic planning,
marketing strategies, financial management, budgeting,
accounting, internet use, taxes, sales and presentation
techniques, time management, and legal issues. The objective
of the program is to assist participants in the preparation
and implementation of a specific and comprehensive business
plan tailored to each individual entrepreneur's needs.
The Commonwealth Corporation's Entrepreneurial Training
Program has graduated over 2,500 aspiring entrepreneurs from
training courses conducted statewide since 1989. An estimated
65% of graduates who have started businesses are still in
operation after 2 or more years. Without the benefit of
training, an average of two out of three small businesses fail
within the first 3 years of operation.
For unemployed and dislocated workers, there may be funds
available to cover the tuition costs of this program. An
orientation/information session is scheduled for November 19th
at 2PM and November 22 at 10 AM at the CCBT downstairs
conference room, 307 Main Street, Hyannis to provide details
on the program and the application process. If you are
interested in attending an orientation/information session for
the Entrepreneurial Training Program, please call Jessica
Tinti at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce at 508-862-0700,
ext. 516.
