Chamber
Hosts 78th Annual Dinner in Hyannis.
Kevin
Howard of Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club was inducted as the Chairman
of the Board as outgoing chair Doreen Bilezikian of the Christmas Tree
Shops handed him the gavel at the Chambers 78th annual
dinner on October 25. New
board members elected that evening were Keith Bergman, Town Manager for
Provincetown and Dan Keefe, owner of Clancys of West Yarmouth.
The event was attended by 388 members and guests and featured
recognition of committee chairs for the past year as well as a video
tribute to some of the recipients of Cape & Islands License Plate
grants. Many thanks to Jon
Goward & Jonis Gold for the video production. Four Guys in Tuxes
serenaded the dinner guests and the whole evening was wrapped up by 8:30
p.m. Many thanks to
Nantucket Trading Co. for their creative solution to our centerpiece
dilemma and thanks to Cape Cod Potato Chips for helping us to fill the
lighthouse canvas bags full of their latest flavors! |

CHILD
CARE CONFERENCE DRAWS OVER 100 TO OFFER IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS |
|
Ardith
Wieworka, Commissioner of the Mass. Office of Child Care Services
speaks to 100 attendees at Chambers Child Care Conference. |
|
The
problems surrounding sufficient safe and affordable day care are critical
to our workforce availability concerns.
To that end, the Chamber sponsored a conference with Senator Henri Rauschenbach and other community leaders to
discuss the matter. Ardith
Wieworka, the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Office of Child
Care Services was a featured panelist.
Co-sponsored by Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, JTEC and the Cape
Cod Child Development program, businesspeople and child care providers met
to discuss ideas and innovative solutions to the childcare needs of
employees on Cape Cod. Suggestions
included better information to employers linking them to currently open
slots, an expansion of a fund to help with emergency daycare needs,
an insurance pool to make liability issues more affordable for employers
and more. Several resources
were made known to the attendees (this info may be obtained by calling the
chamber at 790-4980 and asking for Linda.)
Panelists included Judy Keith of Career Services of Cape Cod and
the Human Resources Association, and Cindy Harrington of the Childcare
Network. A task force has
since been formed by volunteers from the event to follow up on the
suggestions made. |

CHAMBER
GAINS OVER 200 NEW MEMBERS IN FALL DRIVE
Tonys Termites leads the pack!
On
November 2nd & 3rd volunteer recruiters (with
zany names like Marties Mavericks, The Wequasett Wonders, Charlies
Angles and Kevins Closers) conducted a new member sales blitz from the
drive headquarters at the Radisson Inn Hyannis.
The successful drive achieved the goal of 200 members in two days
with other prospective members still to be contacted.
The competition was lively between the teams competing for prizes.
The top individual sales award went to Jeff Heth of Kids On The
Cape (and layout editor of this newsletter!) who won a week in Florida
including air transportation. The
top sales teams were Tonys Termites (Shepley Wood Products) with a
total of 25 new members closed as of 11/10/99 winning that team $500 cash;
the second top team was The Guidebook Team (Kids on the Cape & Cape
Cod Travel Guide) who won $250 cash for their 17 members sold and the
third top team was Marties Mavericks (Citizens Bank) with 14 members
sold. New members were feted
at a reception in their honor on November 10th at Pastiche,
which was well attended and highly energized! |
