Portuguese TRANSLATIONS
As all of you well know, we have a very large Brazilian population in the greater Barnstable/Yarmouth area.  If you have ever vacationed out of this country, you appreciate it when businesses offer menus, forms, etc. in English as well as the language of the country you are visiting.  You are even more please when a person understands what you are saying!

This Portuguese-speaking community is making a concerted effort to learn to read, write and speak in English.  however, there is a time span where the learning curve is not present or is in process.  To help our new residents, we are offering you some resources, which we hope you might utilize.

If you would like to have a menu, a form (whether it is an employment application or form for services) or other items translated, please contact Kathleen M. Milholo at 508-790-5745 or Connie de Souza at 508-661-6771. There will be a fee based on the length of the document and time to translate.

If you do not already have a Portuguese-speaking employee, we would like to encourage you to send an employee to school for conversational Portuguese.  There is nothing more frustration than to be in a country where no one understands what you are saying.  It is also frustrating on your part, not to be able to understand what is being asked of you.  Cape Cod Community College is now offering a course in Portuguese (Brazilian).  They offered in the spring semester for the first time in the evening and will be offering it again - please contact the college for further details.  Also the Sandwich Community School plans to hold a similar course the fall of 2000.  Kathleen Milholo will be the instructor.

If you have any Brazilians, or others who work for you and do not have health insurance, the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod (VNA) might be able help them.  They offer health care access to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families.  they have a variety of free screenings, weight training, wellness programs as well as low cost health insurance, dental and chiropractic programs.  For general information, please instruct those in need to call:  1-888-557-9994.

Maria Deaton is a newly-appointed Assistant D.A. to the Cape & Islands.  She is fluent in Portuguese and specializes in domestic violence within the Brazilian community.  She is also very willing to provide assistance and consultation to businesses with Brazilian employees.  Ms. Deaton can be reached a the office of Philip Rollins at 508-362-3118.

As part of the Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod Community College, it is our goal to make businesses more aware of community resources that can help the business community; but more importantly, can help the people who have chosen to live in this area.  We hope that this awareness will foster better understanding between the two cultures.

CHANGES TO THE WEBSITE
Between July 1999 and March 2000 the Chamber web site received more viewers than the whole year before. There is no doubt that the Internet is a powerful tool, as 67% of our total inquires for vacation information came over the web last year. The Chamber is in the process of redesigning the website to increase functionality (fewer clicks to get the info needed) and to add special sections for Members Only and business services. Our on-going improvements will include new referral on line software to better enhance business for all members regardless of business type.
